Olympic Margarita

Recipe Description

After the holidays, my fridge is packed with all sorts of leftovers from yeast rolls to every form of citrus. I have a pathological aversion to wasting food (could have something to do with being the youngest of nine…the “shake of the bag” as my Irish grandmother hilariously used to say!) so one of the reasons I made this site was to give home mixers like me an opportunity to search by ingredients they have and see what they can make with them. In this case I had–get this–blood oranges, grapefruits, clementines and limes…all of which had to be used in a hurry…and so this Margarita was born. Originally styled the All-Drug Olympics Margarita after the hilarious SNL skit about an Olympics where anything goes, I toned it down to the Olympic Margarita for the family audience 🙂

I love the way this recipe balances, but there are likely countless combinations that work to use up your citrus in a fun, delicious and unique style. As you experiment, keep in mind that orange and grapefruit juices are sweet enough to stand on their own, while lemon and lime juices need a little sugar to balance out–agave syrup, simple syrup, even Grand Marnier will work as a sugar element. I prefer to stick to Cointreau as my liqueur and add a little syrup to balance the lime.
